Obituary

Michael Mackenzie (Mack) Lochrie, aka, The Round Mound of Sound, ‘Bull’, Mack Daddy and Boompa, age 85, passed away April 6, 2023, at home in Madras, with his loving wife Charlene by his side.

Born March 26, 1938, in Bend, Or.  Mack was a charismatic, kind, generous, strong and funny man. His Granddaughter, Janet, wrote this of her Boompa:

“I will always have everything he taught me which includes, but is not limited to; how to fish, how to shoot, how to swear, how to bodysurf, when to bet on the gray horse, what a good cigar tastes like, how much water to put in your whiskey, to quit while you’re up at the casino (I won $20 once at blackjack and have no need to continue), that spilled salt gets tossed over your left shoulder, never put a hat on the bed, stop and get out of the car immediately and turn around three times to the left if a black cat crosses your path, to have a hefty if-not-somewhat-paranoid respect for the elements, that you’re not a real man until you can roll a cigarette one handed on a buckin’ horse in a windstorm. But most importantly, to love everyone with your whole heart and to give life your all so it can give its all back.”

Mack served in the Navy for two years, as a signalman on the USS Floyd B Parks Destroyer. He spent time at Willamette University on a football scholarship. He became a radio announcer and worked for KRCO in Prineville. Later in life Mack owned and operated many radio stations, including KCMX in Ashland, OR and KIPO on Kaua’i. He was a rodeo bull rider and bareback rider during his youth. Later, as he told it, he was guaranteed a paycheck if he announced the rodeo, rather than take his chances riding. Even through the ownership and management of the radio stations, Mack continued to announce rodeos up and down the West Coast. He is a Gold Card, lifetime member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Assoc. In addition to rodeo, Mack also loved horse racing and had a successful string of Quarter Horses and Appaloosas running at various horse racing tracks. After he stopped announcing rodeos, Mack started announcing air shows across the country. He partnered with George Ficke, his former son-in-law Brian Lansburgh, and eventually his daughter, Nancy. He never retired from the Real Estate business and continued chasing the next big sale of RV Parks for his buyers.

He made a positive impact everywhere he went. People loved him and always regaled family and friends with stories of their adventures together. There are so many stories! It was never a dull moment when he was with you. Love and laughter were always present.

He is survived by his wife of 13 years Charlene McKelvy. Also, his daughter, Nancy Lochrie, grandson Hooper Lansburgh (partner Tricia Hinchey), granddaughter Janet Lansburgh (fiancé Russell Nyberg). Many cousins, nieces, and nephews, including his namesake Michael Mackenzie Ingram (wife Kathryn Morrow), Andy Ingram and Jamie (Kelle) Hildebrandt.

Stepdaughters, Cindy Dubisar, Debbie Jorgensen, Vicki McKelvy (husband Freddie Lang), and Erin (Tim) Green. Along with 9 step grandkids and 17 great grandkids he loved to be around (he always said he wanted a big family).

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Abigail Andrews Lochrie. His father & mother Sam and Elizabeth Lochrie, his sister Carol Wright and nephew, Mackie Wright.
