Gary Burtis Obituary

Gary E. Burtis

06-22-1950 – 07-24-2022

Gary E. Burtis passed away July 24, 2022, surrounded by his loving family after a 5-year courageous battle with cancer. Gary was born June 22, 1950, to Robert and Mildred Burtis in Portland, OR.

Gary graduated from Centennial High School in Gresham, OR where he met his wife of over 52 years, Carla. After high school, Gary worked for Crown Cabinets in Portland until moving to Madras in 1976 to own and operate Central Oregon Cabinets. He later became a purchasing agent for Bright Wood Corporation until his retirement in 2016. During his years in Madras, he coached little league and High School Softball for several years.

Gary found a strong sense of peace and contentment in outdoor activities such as fishing, camping, sitting by a campfire while listening to his golden oldies, and golf with his special golf buddies. Gary also loved woodworking, crafting many pieces of furniture for family over the years.

Gary was a loving, patient and caring husband to Carla and father to his three daughters. He enjoyed family time and often told short stories in a long fashion. Gary and Carla were most often seen holding hands and smiling at one another.

Gary is survived by his wife, Carla, his daughters, Carrie Burtis of Redmond, Wendy King (Gary) of Madras, Katie Deroche (Derek) of Kansas City, MO and his sister Teri Burtis (Neal Pederson) of Silverton, OR, and his grandchildren, Carter and Landen Dunten, Carson and Emily King, and Lincoln Deroche. He will be missed by all who knew him including Ollie, the dog he wasn’t sure he wanted but, to Gary’s surprise, loved dearly.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Mildred, his stepfather, Howard Schaefer, and his brother Gregg Burtis.

A Celebration of Gary’s life will be held on Thursday, August 4, 2022, at 11:00 AM at Cornerstone Baptist Church, 675 NE 10th St, Madras OR.

The family would like to thank Hospice of St. Charles Hospital for their care.
