Dwight "ED" Edgar Macy

Dwight Edgar "Ed" Macy went home to his Savior Jesus Christ on the afternoon of January 17, 2021, at the age of 77. Ed was born November 23, 1943, to parents, Dwight O. and Marie (Rhoads) Macy, of Homedale, Idaho. Ed was the second of five children. When Ed was four years old, the family moved to Culver, Oregon, where they began farming with the initial delivery of water from North Unit Irrigation District.

Ed grew up in Culver, attended the schools there and graduated as the Valedictorian in 1961. Ed enjoyed music and participated in chorus and played the trumpet in band. He continued to sing and play the trumpet throughout his life. Ed loved sports and played football, basketball, track and baseball. He was very active in 4-H and FFA and was named the Oregon FFA State Star Farmer in 1961. Ed went on to Oregon State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in crop and soil science in 1965.

Ed married the love of his life, Sharon Vetterlein, on May 2, 1970. Ed and Sharon were introduced by her roommate, Ed's cousin, Linda Rhoads Shepherd. Ed and Sharon started their life on the farm in partnership with Ed's father, Dwight. They were later joined by Ed's younger brother ,Richard. Macys were well known for their russet seed potatoes, peppermint oil and numerous seed crops including carrot seed, onion seed, Kentucky bluegrass seed, coriander seed, garlic seed and other vegetable seed crops. Their brother, John, joined the farm for several years. Ed's son, Mike, farmed throughout his high school and college years, and joined the farming operation after graduating from OSU in 1995. Nephew James, joined Macy Farms in 2011. Ed was so pleased to mentor and observe the next generation continuing the family farming tradition.

Throughout his life Ed was active in many community and agricultural organizations. He was proud to be a charter member of the Metolius Friends Community Church, where he served on numerous committees. Many fondly recall Ed playing the trumpet at Easter Sunrise Service on Round Butte each year. Ed was very involved in founding the Central Oregon Youth for Christ organization. He served several terms on the Culver School Board. Ed was a 4-H leader and a member of the Culver FFA Alumni. He was given the Honorary Chapter Farmer Degree by the Culver FFA. Ed was on the OSU Ag Research Committee and the Oregon Seed Potato Growers Association. Ed served on the Oregon Potato Commission and the National Potato Council. In 1999, Ed was awarded the National Seed Potato Grower of the Year. He was named the Voice of the Oregon Potato Industry in 2000. The National Potato Council gave Ed the Gold Potato Award in 2002. Despite Ed's active community and industry involvement, his greatest pride and joy was in his family and the farm. He loved to drive around the farm and look at the growing crops. He loved to care for the soil. He remained active on the farm until his body did not allow him to go out any longer.

Ed is survived by Sharon, his loving wife of 50 years. He is also survived by his three sons, a daughter and 11 grandchildren: Mike and Milne Macy, of Culver (Tegan, Kailee), Tim and Kristina Macy, of Georgetown, Texas (Noah, Helena, Lucia, Elliana, Oliver), Eric and Misty Macy, of Culver (Cooper, Braxton), Dusty and Megan Miller, of Madras (Dean, Elizabeth). Ed is also survived by his sister, Reata Young-Dewey (Ron); and brothers, John Macy (Karen), and Richard Macy (Terry) He is also survived by his three sister-in-laws, Susan Hooper, Kathy Brune, and Carol MacDougall. Ed adored his numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Renae Charlton.

A graveside service was held January 23, at the Gray Butte Cemetery.
