Barbara (Garrett) Duke died on April 9, 2020, in Madras after 99 richly-lived years. She was born and raised in Farmington, New Mexico with an older brother, Howard, and a twin brother, Andy. After high school she completed a degree at a teachers’ college in Missouri. She married Robert Duke, whom she had met in high school, and they moved to Oregon, where Bob began his teaching career. They settled in Madras, where they raised their two sons, Gary and Craig. Bob taught high school history and coached golf, and Barbara became the Madras librarian, a fitting career for her love of both books and people. Barbara was an artist who also enjoyed sewing, knitting, cooking, camping, bird-watching, and golf. She and Bob “cut a fine figure” in ballroom dancing. She loved social and family gatherings. She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren, with whom she shared many outings, affection, and her creative spirit. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, her son Craig, and grandsons Christopher and Michael. She is survived by her son, Gary, daughters-in-law Rebecca and Pat, granddaughters Brookley Henri and Chelsea Duke Murphy, and six great-grandchildren.
