Allen D. Kollen was born January 27, 1950, in Bend, Oregon, to John and Frances Kollen. He died November 8, 2020, at Hospice House in Bend.
Allen grew up on the family farm on the Agency Plains in Jefferson County. He attended 509-J schools where he played football and wrestled. Representing Madras High School in 1967, he received the All-State Quarterback Award. On a football scholarship, he attended Grey's Harbor Community College in Aberdeen, Washington, and later Eastern Oregon State University in La Grande.
He married Terryl Wells of Culver, and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year. Allen joined the Oregon State Police as a trooper assigned to Roseburg in 1971, Bend in 1973, and Klamath Falls in 1987. In 1996, he became an arson detective for the central and eastern Oregon region until his retirement in 2006. The Oregon Chapter of International Association of Arson Investigators honored him with the Frank Herlinger Investigator of the Year Award in 2001. He served for 15 years as a commissioner for the Crook County Fire and Rescue District Civil Service Commission. Allen also worked for the Corwin Construction Company building cabinets and working on several homes in Jefferson County.
Allen was an avid outdoorsman enjoying camping, hunting and fishing with his family and friends. He enjoyed gardening, landscaping, home improvement projects, and watching his grandchildren in youth sports and performances.
Allen is survived by his wife, Terryl; son, Cody (Sara); daughter, Nikki (Brenden) Baird; brothers, Harold (Katie), and Steve; sister, Karen (Bob) Vigil; and grandchildren, Zoe, Niko, and Ziriako Kollen, Wyatt and Josey Baird.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A private service was held November 17, at Mount Jefferson Memorial Park Cemetery. Donations can be made to NeighborImpact.
