Walter George Raines passed away peacefully surrounded by family after a long battle with cancer at his home in Metolius, Oregon on Wednesday, January 15, 2020.
George was born on July 2, 1949 in Pocasset, Oklahoma to Walter and Gladys (Howe) Raines. The Raines family moved to Metolius in 1954. After graduating from Madras High School in 1967, he served in the US Army and was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War.
He married Trudy Victorine in 1972 and they had a daughter, Angie.
In 1996, George met Tina Bell and they had a son, Howard.
George retired as the City of Madras, Public Works Director in 2005. During his 30+ years of service he held many positions.
Joining the Madras Elks Lodge in 1971, in which he was a lifelong member, he held several different offices including Exalted Ruler and volunteered for many events and functions.
During his retirement, he enjoyed encouraging and coaching his son in his sporting aspirations. George was very involved in the Friends of Madras Baseball program. If he wasn’t coaching, he was cheering in the stands. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially if it involved his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his longtime companion, Tina Bell, son Howard both of Metolius, daughter Angie and Mike Barry of Culver, grandchildren, Grayson (Angelica), Tristen (Casey) and Talyn Barry all of Bend. Siblings include Irvin and Mary Raines, Kathleen and Win Murders, and Janet Raines all of Metolius. Ellen and Don Courtney of Madras, and Jeannie (Bell) and Bill Brown of Vancouver, Washington. Jerry and Karen Bell of Culver and numerous nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Gladys Raines.
