Obituary

Francis Anthony Zalewski was born September 18, 1921, in Chicago, Illinois, to Casimer and Anna Zalewski. He passed away September 12, 2019, just days from his 98th birthday. He grew up in Chicago, enjoying an adventurous boyhood, free to wander the city, yet given a lot of responsibility. The 5th child of his mother and first born of his father, he attended St. Ann’s Catholic grade school, then Crane Technical High School. He worked for Gulbransen Piano company and Danly MaMachine Specialists before he entered the Marines in January of 1942.When Frank and his brother Richard went off to war, sister Irene refused to get married until both brothers returned. Frank was first sent to Oak Harbor Naval Air Base, Washington. Attending a dance, he met Audree who was playing the piano and singing. Going together while Frank was stationed there, he would walk to Anacortes from Oak Harbor a time or two to see her. They were married, December of 1942. Frank was then sent to San Diego in July of 1943, and was soon shipped out to Samoa. He spent about a year in Samoa as a mechanic, until he was sent to Hawaii to recoup from jungle rot, a serious fungal infection. When he was better, he was sent stateside back to Great Lakes, Illinois, for the duration of the war. After WW II, he returned to work at Danly Machine Specialists, then went to work for Liquid Carbonic, a compressed gas business servicing equipment for bottling companies. All three of his children were born in Chicago; Joanne, Barbara and Thomas. In 1951 Frank was transferred to the Seattle area. Living there until 1964, he was transferred to San Carlos, California. He traveled a great many miles with his job, gladly taking off across country to Chicago for his summer vacation, making his last trip with his wife in 2011. He and his wife retired to near Lake Shasta, then moved to Madras in 1992.Francis had many lifelong interests: model airplane building, model railroads, fishing, boating, swimming, construction of remodels and garages and decks. He and Audree were fixtures at Saturday night mass at St. Patrick Church and he enjoyed attending grand children, Aaron and Evan’s school events. With the great grand children he made sure he had a trunk full of hand propelled model airplanes to fly or toys to give them. He spent his last 2 years at East Cascade Retirement Community where he was well taken care of and sang or played his harmonica to all in his company also telling stories of growing up in Chicago. Hospice was also most helpful. Francis is survived by his daughter, Barbara (Michael) Williams, grandsons, Aaron (Monica B.) Schneider, Evan (Christina) Williams, John P. Zalewski, and adopted Ben (Angela) Keeton; eight greats and Nephews and Nieces; Pat(Gerald) Kallas, Jim (Maureen) Berscheid, Judi Zemaitis, Paul (Colleen) Zalewski and Phillip Zalewski; cousins through marriage: Joan LaVine and John (Marge) Garrett; and many great nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters and brothers, wife, Audree, daughter and son-in-law Joanne and Gerald Lake and son, Thomas Zalewski.
