IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Douglas W
Lieuallen
April 8, 1946 – January 28, 2022
Dr. Douglas William Lieuallen passed away peacefully at home and surrounded by family in the early hours of Friday, January 28, 2022. At 75, Dr. Lieuallen’s life was one of unwavering care for family and community, but we know the achievement he would want us to highlight is the 51 years of marriage to the love of his life, Patty and their adventures before and after raising their three boys including camping and backpacking and traveling the world to places like Egypt, India, and Bhutan.
Born in Eugene on April 8, 1946, he was raised in Monmouth, graduated from South Eugene High School in 1964, and from the University of Oregon in 1968 where he met Patty. They married in 1970 while Doug was attending the University of Oregon Medical School where he received his M.D. in 1972, followed by an internship in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 1973, Doug served in the Public Health Service on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation where he and Patty fell in love with this community. In 1976, the couple moved to Ventura where he served as Chief Resident Physician at Ventura General Hospital and where the couple celebrated the arrival of their first son, Christopher Douglas. They returned to Central Oregon and put down roots in Madras in 1978, purchasing a home on Woodside Court where they continued to live and raise their growing family with the addition of the twins, Aaron Michael and Matthew Roy, in 1979.
Upon returning to Madras, Doug became a partner in Madras Medical Group, providing family care to the community until his retirement in 2016 after 40 years of practice. His commitment to family medicine and community were fundamental to who he was. A few highlights we know he was proud of include serving as the county’s EMS Director, singing in the church choir, and sharing his talent for woodwork. Doug also served as President of the Central Oregon Medical Society and President of the Oregon Academy of Family Physicians.
Although a doctor’s life is busy, Doug always made time to be involved with his children including serving as both scouting leader and soccer coach. He was instrumental in building Madras’ first middle and high school soccer programs including development of the soccer field still in use today.
Doug is survived by his wife, Patty, his sons Christopher (Andrea), Aaron (Emily), Matthew (Eric), and his grandsons Wyatt and Weston. He is also survived by the community and church families that were so important to him.
No memorial service is planned at this time, but a celebration of life will be planned for later this year. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Madras Community Food Pantry or the Madras United Methodist Church (both located at 49 NE 12 th St., Madras, Oregon 97741).
